We had a wonderful night at the Nursing Times Awards in the
glitzy surroundings of the Park Lane Hilton on Wednesday 8th
November, coming 2nd – 'Highly Commended' in our category
–
Innovation in your Speciality. Our colleagues in the Continence
Team won in their category
We shall be holding our Healthcare Assistants’/Assistant
Practitioners’ Up-date on Monday 18th October 2010 at
The Source – a training centre conveniently situated
next to the M1 and adjacent to Meadowhall shopping centre.
Hotels are available close by and there is a bus station and
rail link to all main-line stations at the centre. What could
be easier?
The programme will include:-
The HCA Advisor from the RCN speaking on the evolving role
of the Healthcare Assistant, safety nets and working within
protocols
A re-cap on ear irrigation
Decontamination
Documentation and consent
‘Round Table’ groups on the subject of:-
Practical irrigation (using a dummy head), hearing aid care
and otoscopy/video otoscopy

Medico-legal advice is that all nurses should
update regularly. Our new half-day Update session has been
developed for those nurses who have completed our introductory
Study Day within the last 3 years. It is available in Rotherham
and throughout the UK via our network of trainers. Check out

The Primary Ear Care Centre is part of NHS Rotherham,
based in the centre of the town, with easy access to the A1,
M1 and M18. We have recently moved to a purpose-built Provider
Services building – Rotherham Community Health Centre
– our new address and contact details are shown at the
bottom of this page.
A team of 11 provides all the services, which include: ear care
clinics, in a variety of venues throughout the Rotherham area,
training and education, research, advice and support for both
patients and practitioners, health promotion and the sale of
specialist ear care instruments.
A research project carried out by Sheffield University concluded
that nurses trained in ear care can save time and money. Reductions
can be made in GP consultation time, ENT referrals and overall
treatment costs, whilst increasing patient satisfaction. Recent
audits of patients have confirmed a very high level of satisfaction
with our service.
We have 33 licensed trainers in 25 locations throughout England,
Scotland and Wales. All of them present our introductory Study
Day for nurses, which includes irrigation, and the half-day
Update which follows it (see above). Some also provide our Treatments
Study Day, the Basic Awareness for Healthcare Assistants and
our two-day Course for Healthcare Assistants and Assistant Practitioners.
